Background
The Norwegian Medical Dispatch System is a national medical, organizational, and technical system handling all medical emergency calls whether routed directly into one of 19 large hospital-based dispatch centres or received initially by one of the many smaller community-based medical centres.
Methods
All calls using the national medical emergency telephone number 1-1-3 are automatically routed to the nearest hospital-based dispatch centre. When the caller assumes that the situation is not really urgent or dangerous, he can choose to contact the local community-based medical centre by an ordinary eight digit telephone number.
Conclusion
There is close cooperation between the 19 hospital-based dispatch centres and the smaller community-based medical centres. One of the objectives for the Norwegian Index for Emergency Medical Dispatch is to regulate how this co-operation works and also to indicate which emergencies should be handled locally or by one of the specialized hospital-based dispatch centres, respectively.
