The use of cognitive and emotional avoidance strategies, especially in an initial emergency phase seems to allow these workers to limit their sense of helplessness and inability, favoring resilience and the activation of proactive attitudes. Stopping negative emotions seems to reduce stress levels and arousal and intrusive aspects of the trauma. Older workers showed a greater tendency to adopt avoidance strategies toward negative thoughts and emotions, but exhibited higher levels of arousal.
